Belsize Community Library Event

The Belsize Residents Association hosted its autumn talk Belsize in View on 13 November 2013. Filmmaker David S Percy presented a selection of restored archive images from volume 2 of his latest production The Belsize Story, covering the greater Belsize area. The film features the wider Belsize area, including the sometimes overlooked part of Belsize Park located on the eastern side of Haverstock Hill.

A full house at the Belsize Community Library enjoyed over 200 images  shown on a large screen in high definition of Belsize as it was, featuring carefully restored archive pictures, many of which are in colour.

The tour of greater Belsize explored the Chalcots/Eton College area and Fitzjohn’s Avenue, as well as revealing some of the area's lesser known facts, such as the Soviet spying activity that took place in Lawn Road, from where the passing of Atomic Bomb secrets to Soviet Russia was partly masterminded and controlled.

"I  want to record my great enjoyment of your presentation on Wednesday 13 November. It was so informative, and I learnt a great deal." Revd. Paul Nicholson

"We thoroughly enjoyed your talk at the Belsize Library. What an amazing amount of research!
It was particularly interesting to see the architect’s plan for 35 Steele’s Road, probably one of a unique row in London of individual artist’s houses. It was fascinating to see some of the elaborate interiors of the grand houses which have now disappeared. But the most remarkable item of all was the huge old hollow elm tree which visitors could climb inside and see over the top!" Maureen Lambourne
